Human hair comes from individuals all around the world, such as: Indonesia, Asia, Russia, Ukraine, or Turkey. Wig factories contract with people in certain villages, religious temples, or monasteries, to grow hair for a specified period of time. Every individual is asked to follow a strict regime of vitamins and minerals to grow healthy hair. Upon completion, the factory picks up the hair and processes it to make wigs or hairpieces.
There are three basic types of human hair used in wigs: Asian, Indian, and Caucasian (also called European hair). Most human hair wigs are made from Asian hair that has undergone a great deal of chemical processing – bleaching and coloring – to create the final product.
Most human hair wigs are made from Asian or Indian hair because it is the least expensive type of human hair to obtain. Though most common, it is very coarse and often damaged by over processing. Asian hair is heavier, thicker and slightly denser than Indian hair, although not as shiny. Asian hair styles are great for straight and wavy textures because of its body and a smooth texture.
Asian Hair (Chinese Hair)
There are subsets of Chinese hair – Indonesian, Malaysian and Mongolian.
- Indonesian hair is finer to start with and does not need to be processed quite as much.
- Malaysian hair is heavier, thicker and more dense than the Asian and Indian hairs. It is not as shiny as the Indian or Asian hair, with a texture that feels very soft and smooth. It has a lot of body. It is more expensive than both Asian and Indian Hair.
- Mongolian hair is similar to Caucasian Hair, although it is a little more dense than Caucasian/European hair. It is a very soft and silky, has a lot of movement and lays down great for straight styles.
Indian hair (Remy and Non-Remy Hair)
Indian hair is naturally thick and lustrous. It is heavier than Caucasian/European hair but lighter than Asian hair. It has a wonderful deep shine.
Some Indian hair is obtained through religious acts. In the East Indian religion of Hinduism, worshippers tithe money and may make other various material offerings of value such as jewelry or food to their Gods at the temple. Women may even offer their hair because it is valuable to them, as an act of humility or surrender of ego. In these cases, the women’s hair is not only cut, but often their heads are shaved. This may or may not be done by another Hindu, and may or may not be done at the site of the temple. Much of this hair is then gathered and sold to wig makers, and the money is supposed to be used to maintain the house of worship, as well as charities and other good works sponsored by the temple.
Indian hair has a very similar basic structure as European hair. Indian Remy hair is very high quality hair but hard to collect and the price has risen quite high. So most Indian hair on the market is Indian non-remy hair.
Caucasian/European
Caucasian/European hair is the strongest and most durable human hair for wig making. European human hair is more often softer, but also more often much more expensive. This type of hair is not as easy to collect and therefore is the most expensive to use for wigs.
European/Caucasian hair, which mostly comes from Europe, is lighter and thinner than Asian, Indian, and Mongolian. It has a butter soft silky feel, with a lot of movement and lays down great for straight styles. European human hair does not have to come from Europe. It is a group name for different hair with an almost similar structure.
Benefits of Human Hair Wigs
- Human hair wigs can be treated as your own hair.
- You can style as you would your own hair.
- You can cut, chemically treat and heat-style a human hair wig.
A human hair wig must be cared for like your own hair and is typically for people that are able to provide more care and attention for the wig. It needs to be washed, conditioned, dried and styled. Please keep in mind that the human hair which was used to make the wigs has been pre-dyed and chemically treated to achieve the style and color. We do not recommend chemically processing your wigs any further.
