How to Remove a Lace Front Wig

Alia Smart Lace Wig by Jon Renau

One of the benefits of wearing a lace front wig is that you can easily look beautiful and fresh out of the salon with a fraction of the cost (when compared to routine visits), and in a fraction of the time. These benefits do not come with conditions. Part of your wig care routine will require you to wash your wigs, which should be done after the wig is removed.

Part of your decision to wear a lace front wig is learning about how to apply and remove them. We recently discussed how to apply a lace front wig.

So let’s discuss how to safely remove your lace front wig.

You will need:

  • Adhesive solvent or Isopropyl alcohol
  • Q-tips or make-up applicator or small brush

Follow these steps:

Step One: Apply lace wig solvent. We recommend Liquid Gold Glue Remover.

  • Allow a few minutes for the solvent to soften the adhesive, making for easier removal. (You can also use Isopropyl alcohol.)
  • Apply solvent or alcohol by using a q-tip (you can also use a make-up applicator or small brush). Rub along the front and back hairline. Apply a little pressure or pull slightly to loosen the wig. Use more solvent in resistant areas. Keep applying pressure and more solvent until you feel the grip of the wig lessening enough to pull free of the skin.

**To completely remove the wig, you will need to continue to work small sections of the wig, applying pressure and more solvent until the wig comes loose.**

Apply pressure (or pull) gently to prevent tearing the lace.

Step Two: Gently detach the wig by gently loosening each section. Take care not to pull too hard. Re-apply the solvent until you feel the glue loosen its hold. Once you know for sure that the wig is free, remove the wig from your head.

Step Three: Clean your skin.

  • You may soften the glue on your skin with olive oil, working it into any glue spots with your fingers. Once most of the glue is gone, you can wash your face with soap and water to remove any excess glue remaining.

Step Four: Wash and clean the wig.

  • Gently agitate the wig in the sink with a mild shampoo followed by a light, oil free conditioner. The wig should be allowed to air dry until completely dry.

Tip: After the wig is dry, if you spot some glue residue, use the mirror trick. Take a hand held mirror and slide the glued area of the wig on it–the glue will rub off onto the mirror.

Once the wig is cleaned and dried, you are ready to reapply, if desired.
